Preservation Group Formed
The Preservation Foundation was also instrumental in having the Cemetery listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Sites in 2001, signifying the historical significance of our rural Cemetery.
During the later half of the 20th century, the income earned by the cemetery was not sufficient to meet the needs for upkeep and improvements and this caused heavy indebtedness. The trustees investigated fundraising to benefit the cemetery and formed the corporation, Mt. Adnah Preservation Foundation, Inc. This foundation is a 501 C (3) Tax exempt organization.
In 1994, a group of volunteers started the fundraising efforts by contacting lot owners and friends of Mt. Adnah for donations. The trustees also held various fundraising activities and with the two groups working together, the cemetery was out of debt after several years.
The preservation Foundation has continued to raise money for the preservation of the grounds and monuments in the cemetery. The organization has also created an endowment fund to raise extra funds for operating expenses and maintenance of the cemetery.
Since 1994, the Foundation has been able to carry out its mission of helping to preserve the Mt. Adnah Cemetery. Preservation is an on-going necessity in an old and historic cemetery, such as Mt. Adnah, and it appears that there will be a need for an active Mt. Adnah Preservation Foundation to work with the Cemetery Trustees for many years to come. To meet current trends, the cemetery has created an area dedicated to cremation burials and this area is being landscaped with funds donated to the Preservation Foundation.
Mt Adnah's great natural advantages, along with improvements made throughout its long history, can still delight visitors to the grounds. In fact, Dr. Moses Lindley Lee's aspirations for the cemetery are as relevant today as they were in 1855, when he stated
"...we should feel ourselves inexcusable did we fail to notice and commend the action of many of our fellow citizens for the interest they have uniformly manifested in the enterprise, and the improvements they have individually made on their private plots, illustrating and demonstrating as it does, that our efforts are in harmony with the tastes and wishes of the people, and inevitably forming the conviction that if the affairs of the Association continue in the future with the same wisdom and fidelity as they have hereto been, Mt. Adnah will become the most interesting and hallowed retreat on earth, to the citizens of Fulton and Oswego Falls and their environs."
Mt. Adnah remains an important and integral part of Fulton's rich and diverse history and as such, deserves renewed appreciation, respect and help from the population to make Dr. Lee's vision once again a reality.
